The development of FRIDAY AFTER FRIDAY received funding from OPERA America's Opera Grants for Female Composers program, supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
FRIDAY AFTER FRIDAY is a one-act collage chamber opera amplifying the voices of Syrian women trapped by the ongoing war. An all-female ensemble plays a multitude of characters conveying sisterhood and solidarity in the face of unspeakable horrors. The libretto draws from numerous sources: memoirs of native Syrian and Western-born female embedded journalists, documentaries, and interviews with a variety of Syrian citizens. Short vignettes of narratives, illuminating a range of political and personal perspectives, chart the role of women as an active galvanized force within the conflict.
